The prayer rope (“Chotki” in Russian and “Komboskini” in Greek) is a circular rope woven from wool yarn and comprised of knots and beads that is used as an aid in praying — namely the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” The Jesus Prayer is called the “sinner’s prayer” because it is an invocation of the name of Jesus for forgiveness, mercy and salvation. It is called the “prayer of the heart” because it is prayed not just with our mind and tongue but with our whole being. According to monastic tradition, the Jesus Prayer is the most effective way to pray and to “pray without ceasing.” (1 Thes. 5:17) Made by Orthodox nuns in a US monastery. 50 Knot.
