A SHORT HISTORY OF COFFEE
COFFEE   >   History of Coffee

Catholic? Coffee
Approved by the Pope in 1600 A.D.

Coffee was first discovered in Eastern Africa––according to legend––by a goat herder named Kaldi, who observed his goats acting unusually hyper after eating berries from a bush. As word spread of the fruit, monks began drying the berries and transporting them to distant monasteries. They immersed the berries in water, ate the fruit, and drank the liquid as a stimulate to stay awake during times for prayer.

Coffee then traveled through Turkey where it was first roasted and boiled in water. When coffee arrived in Europe in the late 1500s, Catholics were very fearful and critical of the drink, calling it "the drink of the Devil" (because of it's Muslim roots). After being banned by the Orthodox, Pope Clement VIII was petitioned to condemn it. To their surprise, the Holy Father, already a coffee drinker, blessed the coffee declaring it a truly Catholic beverage for all Christians to enjoy.

Another interesting account, when a vast Ottoman Turk army was marching on Vienna in 1683, a Capuchin Franciscan friar Blessed Marco d'Aviano was sent by the Pope to unite the outnumbered Catholic troops. Due to the prayers of Blessed Marco, the Turks fled––according to legend––leaving sacks of coffee which Catholics found too bitter to drink. So Blessed Marco sweetened it with honey and milk, which is where we get the drink Cappucino.

What can we learn from this?

(1.) Coffee is a Catholic drink to be enjoyed by all;

(2.) True followers of St. Francis will unite divided Catholics to fight the enemies of the Church and seek to convert them through prayer, penance, humility, charity and if necessary, with words;

(3.) As Blessed Marco solved the problem of bad bitter coffee in the 17th Century, MONROCK can solve the problem of bad bitter (Mermaid) coffee (and other grocery store coffees) in the 21st Century.

CONCLUSION: MORE-THAN-FAIR-TRADE COFFEE: Whether at home, work, school, or the monastery, great tasting coffee is an affordable luxury everyone can enjoy––the Pope declared it so 400 years ago. We offer 100% Premium Arabica Coffees from all over the world, freshly roasted in the American heartland, and shipped right to your door.

Our coffees are MORE-THAN-FAIR-TRADE, i.e., we pay MORE than Fair Trade prices so that more money goes into the pockets of farmers and less into the pockets of watchdogs, hyper-capitalists, socialists and communists, though we offer Fair Trade coffees for those who prefer otherwise. Contact Us for more Fair Trade coffees.

Regardless of Fair or Free Trade, each and every purchase supports this lay monastic apostolate as well as our family of five, the priests, religious, and the lay faithful we serve and who support us, and thus you sustain the Church's "new evangelization".
